Berlin, 02.03.2022 (BA/gm)
European rail companies are offering free travel and extra car-riages to bring refugees from Ukraine to safety. Travellers with Ukrainian passports or identity cards can now use around 40 international long-distance trains to travel from Poland, Austria and the Czech Republic to Germany. Cooperation with the rail-way companies in the Czech Republic and Austria is opening up additional travel options to more arrival stations in Germany. Refugees can now enter Germany via Poland, Austria and the Czech Republic and travel as far as Berlin, Dresden, Nurem-berg and Munich without a ticket.

Since Tuesday, DB and Polish State Railways have extended the EuroCity trains with additional carriages to enable more refugees to travel westwards.

The „helpukraine“ ticket facilitates onward travel within Germany. This is available to refugees from Ukraine at all DB travel centres and DB agencies. The free ticket is val-id for travel on long distance, regional and local services to any destination station. This means that refugees can reach their families, relatives and friends all across Germany. The ticket is also accepted on trains to Denmark, Belgium, France (using ICE, TGV and Thalys trains), Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Switzerland and on EuroCity trains to Italy via the Brenner Pass. In addition, all regional and local trains in all of Germany can be used free of charge, with passengers only having to show proof of identity (passport or ID card).

Deutsche Bahn provides information for refugees and other people on the website bahn.de/helpukraine and can also help people via the customer hotline 030 2970 in several languages.

To keep informed of the situation concerning events in Ukraine, DB continues to liaise closely with the Federal Government, the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) and the authorities at national and local level, as well as with partner railways in neighbouring countries.
